A car crashed into a crowd of people in the German capital, Berlin, injuring at least 30 people.

The police confirmed that one person died in the incident.

The accident occurred around 10:30 am local time (9:30 am GMT) near the historic Kaiser Wilhelm Church and the city's zoo, according to local media.

Police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene.

Footage showed a person was lying on the street covered in a blue sheet, according to the media.

Initial reports indicate that the police arrested a man, and it is not yet known whether the incident was a deliberate act or a traffic accident.

Berlin Police said that they are currently at the scene with around 130 emergency personnel.
Local media reported that a vehicle, a small car, was secured on site.

Investigators were looking into whether the incident was a deliberate attack or possibly an accident with a medical cause, a police spokesperson said.

Blankets covered what appeared to be a body in a cordoned-off area guarded by police.

A small, silver coloured Renault car was lodged inside a shop after smashing through a plate glass window.
